We’re always blown away by some of the physical challenges people put themselves through to raise money for our work in Burundi, and summertime always brings a flock of faithful fundraisers getting their hiking boots, lyrca or hospitality on to raise money to see Burundi transformed. Ready for the rundown? Take a deep breath…
Chris, an International Mountain Guide, marked his 60th birthday with a fundraising climb in the Lake District to raise money for our work in Burundi. The aim was to undertake a monster challenge of 70 climbs (4300m of ascent!) with total 34 miles worth of running between the climbs! Oh, and all under 24 hours, by the way!! Unfortunately, poor weather meant the conditions were unsafe to complete the full challenge, but Chris got a good way through it, and has managed to raise over £800 in the process! What an incredible job.
Mabel in Northern Ireland hosted a coffee morning at her home for over seventy people, to celebrate her 70th birthday! As well as a chance to get together and have a gab, guests were able to hear a little about the work in Burundi, which Mabel herself has visited and seen first hand. Guests also generously donated, knowing that the money raised would go towards an excellent cause – they raised over £4000 between them – incredible!
The annual Tour du Burundi was another huge success this year! A group of ten cyclists from the United Kingdom and USA took on the challenge of 100km average, and 38,000ft total elevation to visit various projects, all whilst raising money to support them. If you’d be interested in finding out more, or even signing up to join for 2024, then check out the details here.
Billy, who has raised money for us in the past, undertook another challenge of doing five triathalons in five days! He undertook this monster challenge alongside friends and other participants in the beautiful coastal village of Portballintrae.
Our very own Wendy Clow, our Supporter Care & Partnerships Coordinator, undertook an ultra challenge – a 25km hike in the Peak District. Despite the threatening forecast, the sun shone and the hills were kind – best of all Wendy managed to raise nearly £2000!
Between these amazing fundraisers, we estimate that we’ve raised over £50,000 this summer alone! Incredible!! We’re so grateful to all those who gave their time and energy to fundraising for us, and to their friends, families, and colleagues who generously supported them.
